Romaine writes to Elliot, for Newcastle's information, to forward a copy of a report from the “Deputy Adjutant General of
Royal Marines” on the extra pay to the marines at Vancouver Island.
In the minutes, Elliot, in reference to the enclosed report on missing extra pay for Royal Marines, notes
the clarity of the information and surmises two courses of action in response. The
first is to write to Douglas and reiterate previous instructions or, second, to inquire about “extra pay at San Juan.”
The first of the two documents included in the file is a letter from Wesley to the Secretary of the Admiralty, which discusses a detachment of Royal Marines at Esquimalt, who apparently did not receive any colonial or extra pay for one year; the second
is a draft reply from Newcastle to Douglas, which addresses the higher rate of pay granted to “this Detachment” of marines.

With reference to your letter of the 5th Instant;
I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit to you herewith,
for the information of His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, a copy of a Report from the Deputy Adjutant General of Royal Marines on the subject
of Extra pay to the Marines at Vancouvers Island, and the periods for which paid.
