William Govett Romaine was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to
the bar at the Inner Temple on 25 January 1839 and practiced as a lawyer until 1854,
when he was appointed deputy judge advocate of the army in the east during the Crimean
War.
He was made a companion of the Bath in 1857, and in April that year he became a secretary
to the Admiralty. He became judge advocate general in India in June 1869 and remained
there until 1873. In 1876 he became a member of the Egyptian Conseil du Treésor, eventually
becoming president of the organization.
Romaine retired in 1879 and died at Old Windsor on 5 May 1893.
