Julyan writes to Elliot, for Newcastle's information, to report estimates for “several articles required for British Columbia,” which include a “Small Fire Engine,” and “Coke.”
The minutes ask to instruct the “the Agent to procure & forward the articles,” with the exception of the coke.
The first of the two documents included in the file is a draft letter from Elliot to Hamilton, which forwards a copy of Julyan's letter; the second is a draft letter from Elliot to Crown Agents, which instructs the Agents to procure and forward the requested stores, except for the coke.

I have the honor to report for the information of the Duke of Newcastle that the estimated cost of the several articles required for British Columbia—the requisition for which was forwarded to this Office in your letter of the 7th inst—is as follows, exclusive of freight and Insurance:
Vizt Stores for the Assay and Melting Office £172.18.6
Small Fire Engine 5. 0.0

The time required to complete the orders will be about eight weeks.
With respect to the Coke, I have not been able to find any Ship Owner willing to carry it as Ballast, as suggested by Captain Gosset. The rate of freight demanded is 50/- per ton Measurement, which is equal to about £5 per ton weight.
It is presumed therefore that it is not the wish of the Colonial Government that it should be sent out under these circumstances.

The original requisition is herewith forwarded for reference and I beg that you will have the goodness to return it to this Office, if any of the Articles specified therein are to be provided by the Agents General.

Mr Elliot
Instruct the Agent to procure & forward the articles with the exception of the Coke, and ask the Treasury to pay the cost saying that the Governor will be directed to repay the advance. I think the Govr ought to be instructed as in my Minute on 913.
