Hamilton writes to Rogers to report that the “Paymaster General” has been authorized to pay “Naval Services”
£35.7.0 for “expenses incurred by the Admiralty” in the entertainment of the Bishop of British Columbia aboard the Grappler, in October of 1861.
The minutes ask that the Admiralty be advised of the payment reported in Hamilton's letter, and to adopt this process as a “Standing Rule” for such letters.
The file includes a draft letter from Elliot to the Admiralty, which advises that the Paymaster General has been authorized to
pay Naval Services £35.7.0 for the Bishop of British Columbia's entertainment.
In reply to Mr Elliot's Letter of the 30th Ulto,
I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury
to acquaint you that the Paymaster General has been authorized to
pay to the credit of Naval Services the sum of £35.7.0 in
repayment of the Expenses incurred by the Admiralty on the occasion
of the entertainment of the Bishop of British Columbia on board the Gun
Boat "Grappler" in October last.
In all these cases, it should be a Standing Rule to inform
the Admiralty. Otherwise they are apt to renew the Claim, and
[scant?] becomes necessary, & trouble is incurred. Draft to Admiralty.
Draft, Elliot to Secretary to the Admiralty, 17 April 1861, advising
the paymaster general had been authorized to pay £35.7.0 to naval
services for entertainment of the Bishop of British Columbia.
