7 July 1864
Sir,
In reply to the enquiry contained in the last paragraph of your letter of the 3rd ultimo I have the honor to acquaint you for the information of Mr Secretary Cardwell that the amount overpaid on account of the Government of British Columbia on the 30th June was £1289.9.6, but that the Crown Agents have received from the Colony a Bill for £6200 which matures on the 30th proximo.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,

Mr Elliot
Under these circes I think that we may tell the Govr that orders have been given to the Crown Agents to comply with the requisition contained in Sir Jas Douglas' desph of the 11 Apl/64, and also that they have been Authorized to pay themselves the cost of such requisition out of the bill for £6200 which matures on the 30 proxo.
It may perhaps be a question whether, as the Colony is indebted to the Agents the sum of £1289, and the expected bill does not mature for nearly 2 months, the present wd not be a favorable moment for telling Govr Seymour to be careful to keep the Agents in funds to meet his requisitions. Authorize the Agents to repay themselves.
ABd 8 July
As the Bill is here, I would pass over for the present in silence any admonition about keeping them in funds. In other respects, draft as proposed.
