I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 25
of the
30th of August, reporting the progress of the Expeditions for the
discovery of the perpetrators of the
Bute Inlet massacre.
I await your fuller Report on the subject, but in the meantime I
have to express
my great satisfaction that you have safely returned to
the duties of your government, and that so much discipline and good
order was maintained, and so little loss of life incurred.
I hope that in the result security will be reestablished and
friendly relations with the Indians generally not disturbed.
