With reference to Mr Elliot's letter of 24th Ultimo, I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to transmit to you the enclosed copy of a Report from the Master of the Mint dated 30th Ultimo, relating to the proposed increase of the Staff of the Assay Department in British Columbia, and I am to state that My Lords concur in the opinion expressed by Mr Secretary Cardwell that it wouldbeManuscript image be premature to sanction an addition to the staff of that Department until time and experience have shewn how far the business and profits will justify the additional expenditure.
