My Lord Duke,
In obedience to the instructions conveyed in Your Grace's
despatch No. 16 of 2nd March 1868, I have the honor to
forward the Deed by which the Hudson's Bay Company reconveyed
Vancouver Island to theCrown. Crown.
I add copies of Minutes which have passed between the Colonial
Secretary and Attorney General on the subject.
3. I shall, as suggested by Your Grace, bring the matter before
the Legislative Council at its next Session.

Deed of reconveyance not on microfilm.
W.A.G. Young, Colonial Secretary, to H.P.P. Crease, Attorney
General, 6 May 1868, advising the Secretary of State wishes that the
original deed of reconveyance be forwarded to London and an
attested copy retained in the colony.
Crease to Young, 8 May 1868, recommending an ordinance be
passed to ensure that the attested copy of the deed could serve as
evidence in court.
Minute, Young to Crease, no date, querying whether having
the deed registered "in extenso" in the Land Registry Office
would not serve the purpose.
Minute, Crease to Young, 11 May 1868, agreeing that it did,
with qualifications.

Elliot to Keeper of the Records, 27 August 1868, Record Office, transmitting
for storage in the Archives the original deed granting Vancouver
Island to the Hudsons Bay Company and the deed by which the
company reconveyed it to the Crown.
