My Lord,
I have the honor to forward to Your Lordship a letter from Mr Begbie, Chief Justice of this Colony, praying for promotion to a more lucrative appointment.
2. Mr Begbie, haswithoutManuscript image without doubt, discharged the duties of his present office well, and faithfully, during a trying period in the Early history of this Colony. And my only objection to his application is, that its success must deprive British Columbia of his valuable services.

If Mr Begbie is as good a man as the Govr thinks him, he might be worth considering with reference to the possible vacancy in the C.J[ustice]ship of the Straits Settlements; which office however we have no sufficient reason for believing that Sir B. Maxwell is immediately about to resign.

Reply that Lord Kimberley will not fail to make a note of Mr Begbie's application for promotion to a more lucrative appointment; but that he has no Knowledge of any intention, on the part of the Chief Justice of the Straits Settlement, to retire from his present office.
