No. 5
11 July 1870
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 81 of the 7th June enclosing a letter from Chief Justice Begbie, in which he applies for promotion to a more lucrative appointment in another Colony, and suggests that his claims might be considered in connection with the Chief JusticeshipManuscript image of the Straits Settlements which he is informed about to become vacant.
I have to request you to infrom Mr. Begbie, in that I will not fail to make a note of his application, but that I have no knowledge of any intention, on the part of the Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements to retire from his present office.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
humble Servant,
Kimberley
