Hammond informs Merivale that the Foreign Office “concurs” with Labouchere that Douglas’s “proceedings” regarding the US Navy’s request “of landing Eighty-Seven Indian Prisoners”
was correct.
The minutes make a note to write to Douglas “accordingly.”
I have laid before the Earl of Clarendon your Letter of the 26th
Ultimo, inclosing a Copy of a Despatch from the Governor of Vancouver's Island, reporting the arrival in Puget's Sound of the officer commanding
the United States' Naval Forces, for the purpose of landing Eighty-Seven
Indian Prisoners, and I am to request that you will state to Mr
Secretary Labouchere that Lord Clarendon concurs in his opinion that the
proceedings of Governor Douglason
on the occasion in question should be
approved.
I am Sir,
Your most obedient humble Servant,
E. Hammond
