Rayne writes to the Colonial Office to “enquire what authorities should be applied to for
information as to the terms in which land may be obtained” on Vancouver Island.
Enclosed is a draft reply from Fortescue to Rayne referring him to the Hudson’s Bay Company.
Being desirous to emigrate to Vancouver's Island, I take the
liberty of troubling you, to enquire what authorities should be applied
to for information as to the terms on which land may be
obtained in that Colony.
