Minutes (3), Other documents (1).
Romaine informs the CO that Rear Admiral Seymour has been dispatched in the “Tribune” from China to Vancouver Island with “as many Supernumerary Marines as she can properly carry & he can spare;” as
well, the “Pylades” and “Amethyst” have also been ordered to the colony.
The minutes “acquaint the Governor” and express annoyance that the Admiralty had kept
them “in the dark” about the “Pylades” and “Amethyst” plans.
Enclosed is a draft from Lytton to Douglas reporting the Admiralty’s instructions to Seymour.
I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to state, for the information
of Secretary Sir E. Bulwer Lytton, that directions were sent last night by the overland mail to Rear Admiral Sir Michael Seymour to dispatch Her Majesty's Ship Tribune from China to Vancouver Island with as many Supernumerary Marines as she can properly carry & he can spare.
Sir Michael Seymour in May last was instructed to send HM Ships PyladesPylades and Amethyst to the Pacific Station as soon as their services in India and China might be no longer
required, and the Rear Admiral has now been ordered to send the two Ships in the first
instance to Vancouver Island.
I am, Sir,
Your most obedient humble
Servant
H.G. Romaine
Mr Merivale
Acquaint the Governor by the Mail of the 1st proxo.
Probably the Admy had some sufficient reason for keeping us in the dark; but it would have been very
comforting if we had known before of these instructions to the Pylades & Amethyst.
