Shepherd warns Stanley that the “auriferous district” in the Thompson River region is not within Governor Douglas’s jurisdiction and that “it is possible his regulations may be disregarded.” Shepherd hopes to learn the “course” intended by Her Majesty’s Government and assures the
CO that the HBC will “cordially co-operate” with any regulations “with a view to the
preservation of good order” in the mine fields.
The minutes note that Douglas’s despatches on the subject are in circulation and that this memo may be passed on
without attaching them.
Shepherd to Stanley
I have the honour to inform your Lordship that a letter has been
lately received from Governor Douglas dated Victoria,
Vancouver's Island January 4th 1858 enclosing Copy of a
Proclamation, and other documents relative to the discoveries of
gold in the District of Thompson's River; but as Governor Douglas mentions that he has written a Despatch on this subject
direct to the Colonial office, I do not consider it necessary to
trouble Your Lordship with copies of these documents.
