Abstract
Public Offices document. Minutes (4), Enclosures (untranscribed) (1).
Smith forwards, on behalf of the HBC, an extract of a letter to Douglas responding to questions over Cameron’s salary.
The minutes decide to inform Douglas that the government will “acquiesce” to the “view” taken by the HBC and hope that the legislature of Vancouver Island “will provide the means which are requisite for the remuneration of the Chief Justice of the Colony.”
Enclosed is an extract of a letter from Shepherd to Douglas suggesting that as Cameron’s appointment was “made by the Crown at the suggestion of the local legislature,” it was the responsibility of the legislature to provide for his salary.

I am directed by the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th Ultimo, transmitting, by direction of Lord Stanley, a copy of a Despatch from the Governor of Vancouver's Island, and stating that his Lordship would be glad to be informed whether the Governor and Committee had made any proposal to Governor Douglas in reference to the Salary to be paid to Mr Cameron as Chief Justice of that Island.
In reply I am directed to forward herewith an Extract of a letter addressed by the Company toGovernorManuscript image Governor Douglas upon this subject on the 20th November last.
