Sir,
With reference to your letter of the 20th inst stating it to be the wish of the Secretary of State for the Colonies that a Force of Royal Engineers (Sappers and Miners) should be sent to New Caledonia, I am directed by Secretary Major General Peel to request that you will acquaint Sir E B Lytton that an officer of Royal Engineers will be selected for this duty and a company of Royal Engineers will be Manuscript imagemade up of 150 noncommissioned officers and men, and placed under orders to proceed on this service.

It will be requisite to provide either the Governor or this Officer with instructions as to his proceedings on arriving in the Colony—and personal communication with the latter will be essential.

We may now inform the Govr. if you think right by the 1st Aug. of the Manuscript imagespeedy departure of these men; but I conclude that if we can despatch them by the steamer of the 16th it will be as much as we can do. I agree with Mr Blackwood that you ought to see the officer in command.
