King to Secretary of State
Carmarthen, Wales
July 6th 1858
Sir,
With reference to former communications from me soliciting employment as Superintendent of Police, or other employment in one of Her Majestys Colonies, I beg to remark that as it appears the recent discovery of Gold in Vancouvers Island has turned the tide of Emigration from China & California to that Island, my services might be available there, as from my service as an officer in the Army for seven years, and subsequent experience as a Police Officer, together with my knowledge of the French & German Languages—also of Hindoostanie of which I am a passed Interpreter and from the fact of my having resided three years in China and being tolerably acquainted with Chinese, together with the Testimonials I did myself the honor to forward with my first application I trust I may not be deemed presumptuous in submitting that my services might tend as much to public benefit as to my own. Having in my former letter referred to [a] Gentleman with whom I am acquainted & whose aid I depend upon in obtaining your kind patronage, & consideration of my qualifications—should it be necessary.
I have the honor to be Sir
Your most Obedient Servant
E. Hammond King
Superintendent
Carmarthenshire Constabulary
The Right Honble The Secretary of State
