With reference to my letter of
30th June last, and your reply of the
26th July stating that the
Duke of Newcastle would, through the
Governor of
Vancouvers Island, give orders for the erection, by the
Royal Engineers, of a Naval Powder Magazine, when furnished with the
necessary details, provided the cost thereof were borne by the War
Department.
I am now directed by
Mr Secretary Herbert to acquaint you, for the
information of His Grace, that the Magazine will be required to
bebe
sufficiently capacious to hold 5188 barrels and 682 half cases and I
am to request that instructions may be sent to the Governor to place
a suitable Site at the disposal of the War Department.
Colonel Moody will be instructed to communicate with the Governor
upon the subject, and the Secretary of State proposes, if it meets
with His Grace's concurrence, to direct the Inspector General of
Fortifications to correspond direct with
Colonel Moody in respect of
the details of execution and payment.
