I have received your despatch of the
17th August forwarding a
Memorial to
the Queen from certain Inhabitants of
Vancouvers Island
expressing their feelings on the subject of the occupation of
San Juan
by the
American Troops.
This address has been laid before
the Queen who has been pleased to
receive the same very graciously, and to command me to express Her
satisfaction at the spirit of loyalty and patriotism which has been
evinced by the Memorialists. It is Her Majesty's hope that the
Governments of the repective Nations will be able to settle this
question if a spirit conciliatory to the adjoining Country and
satisfactorysatisfactory to the Colonists.
