Sir,
I have to acquaint you that I have authorized the Colonial Agents General to issue to Mr. Pemberton the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds (£250) on account of the half salary due to him as Surveyor General of Vancouver Island while on leave of absence.

There are no funds, as you are aware belonging to the Colony of Vancouver Island in the hands of the colonial Agents, and I have therefore to instruct you immediately on the receipt of this despatch to remit the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds (£250) to this Country in repayment of the advance thus made on account of the Colony.
