I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of
Sir F. Rogers despatch
of the
16th April N
o 94 transmitting an application from the
Honble James K. Howard one of the Commissioners of Her Majesty's
Woods and Forrests
for half a hundred weight of the seed of the Douglas Fir to
to be sent
to England by next spring, and that the same quantity may be supplied
for a few successive years, and I beg to acquaint your Grace that I
will take immediate steps to meet the views of the Commissioners of
Woods and Forrests in this respect.
2. From the experience we have of sending these seeds to England it
is found that Separating the seeds from the
cones cones exposes them to
climatic and other injurious influences, and it is therefore
requisite to send the cones entire. I will cause a collection to be
carefully made and have the cones put up in water tight casks for
Shipment to England, which arrangement, though more expensive, will
be repaid by the seeds being received in a perfect state of preservation.
