21st October 1864
Sir,
I have had the honor of receiving your letter of yesterday's date, apprizing me, by direction of Mr Secretary Cardwell, of a representation made by the Governor of Vancouver's Island, to the effect that it is reported I am seeking employment in this Country, which will cause my relinquishment of the Office I hold in the Colony; and, therefore, requesting me, at my earliest convenience, to inform the Secretary ofStateManuscript image State of my intentions on this point.
2. In reference thereto I beg to express my thanks to Mr Secretary Cardwell, for thus affording me the opportunity of stating, in contradiction of such reports, that I am not seeking, and that I have not sought, any employment which would cause me to relinquish the Office that I have the honor to hold in the Colony: and in support of this I would mention that, since my arrival in England, I was offered an appointment, equal if not superior, so far as mere emolument is concerned, to that of Colonial Secretary of Vancouver's Island, and that I declined the same, preferringtoManuscript image to identify my fortunes with the prospective advantages which, I believe, may, without presumption, be contemplated by those who faithfully fulfil their trust while employed in the Civil Service of the Colonies.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient
and humble Servant
William A.G. Young
