Richard Ebden received his BA from Christ's College, Cambridge in
1856 and an MA in
1859.
1 He passed a competitive examination in
1858 and was appointed clerk in the Mediterranean department of the Colonial Office.
2 After serving as private secretary to
Sir Frederic Rogers, principal undersecretary, Ebden was promoted to assistant senior clerk in
July 1866, senior clerk in
1872, and chief clerk in
1879.
3 From
1881-1896 he also served as head of the General Department of the Colonial Office.
