Ebden, Richard
Richard Ebden received his BA from Christ's College, Cambridge in 1856 and an MA in 1859.1 He passed a competitive examination in 1858 and was appointed clerk in the Mediterranean department of the Colonial Office.2 After serving as private secretary to Sir Frederic Rogers, principal undersecretary, Ebden was promoted to assistant senior clerk in July 1866, senior clerk in 1872, and chief clerk in 1879.3 From 1881-1896 he also served as head of the General Department of the Colonial Office.4
