Regent in 1811 and monarch in 1820, King George IV—christened George Augustus Frederick—was
better known for his indulgences than his policies. The despatches refer only to acts
passed during his reign. In 1829, he grudgingly allowed his government to pass the
Catholic Relief Act that removed many restrictions on Roman Catholics.
