Washington, DC, formally the District of Columbia, is located on the Potomac River—“potomac”
is Algonquin for trading place.1 In 1790, US Congress drew a 260 square km boundary to mark the capital of the federal
government, called the District of Columbia, even today, DC is a territory, not a
state.2
