Godley reports that pay for the detachment of troops to British Columbia from the War Office had not ceased, but the Treasury will be asked to take over from
the date of embarkation.
The minutes note “a great deal of confusion” concerning the matter of pay for these
troops. The War Office speaks of “regimental pay” while the Colonial Office was previously
concerned about the “extra or working pay.”
Enclosed is a statement of embarkation dates of the various detachments of the Royal
Engineers despatched to British Columbia; and a draft from Merivale to the Under-Secretary of the War Office advising that his letter of 22 November referred to extra pay and allowances rather than regimental pay.

With reference to your letter of 22nd
ultimo;

I am directed by Secretary Major General Peel to acquaint you, for
the information of Secretary Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, that the
Officers and Men composing the Detachment of Troops despatched
to British Columbia have not ceased to receive pay from this
Department. The Secretary of State, however, has made
arrangements for ultimately charging to the Funds provided for
the purpose by the Treasury as intimated in Mr Merivale's
letter of 18 August 1858,

all expenses connected with this expedition which come under the
cognizance of this Office from the dates of Embarkation.
A return shewing those dates is enclosed.

I have arranged with Mr Talbot that another letter should
be written & I annex a draft accordingly?
