Sanders submits character references in hopes for a military or police appointment in British Columbia.
The minutes regret that it is “impossible” for the CO to give Sanders a “direct” appointment in British Columbia.
Enclosed are three testimonials of Sanders’ excellent conduct including one in German from Archduke Wilhelm of Austria; and a draft from Carnarvon to Sanders forwarding Lytton’s regret that it was not in his power to provide an appointment to any office in
British Columbia.

both as to my services in Austria and in England; and venture
again to solicit some direct appointment from the Home Government—or
that you will be pleased to recommend me in such a manner to the
