By the letter of the 7th Novr the Agents were told to
reckon the full salary at £3,000 a year. Since that date the Salary has been increased to £4,000, but by a Clause in the Ordinance no payment can be made under it till HM's confirmation has been duly proclaimed. We have not heard that this has been done, tho' there can be little doubt that Mr Birch has taken the neccessary steps for the purpose. Yet I suppose we cannot authorize Mr Seymour's receiving the increase?
Mr Elliot
We must observe the Law.
