I have laid before my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty
your letter of the
6th stating that the Colonial finances
of
British Columbia are no longer able to bear a share in the
expense of the Survey of that Coast.
My Lords are of opinion that the chief work of that Survey,
now removed some
hundred hundred miles from the actual Settlements of the
Colony is really more for the benefit of Her Majesty's Ships
than for the Commercial purposes of the Colony; & I am to request
that you will inform the Secretary of State that my Lords have
given directions for the expenses of the Survey and the hire of
the "
Beaver" Vessel to be borne by the Imperial Government.
