With reference to my Letter of the 28th ultimo, I am directed
by Earl Granville to transmit to you, to be laid before the Earl
of Kimberley, a Copy of a Despatch from Her Majesty's Minister
at Washington, inclosing Copies of a Correspondence with Mr
Secretary Fish in regard to the Census which has been recently
taken by the United States Authorities in the Island of San
Juan.
Fish to Thornton, 21 January 1871, enclosing the suggested form
of a note to be appended to the U.S. census report.
Note, no date, respecting the joint occupancy of San Juan Island
at the time of the U.S. census.
Thornton to Fish, 23 January 1871, suggesting the insertion of
the sentence, "This occupation still exists, the question of
sovereignty of the Island being yet undetermined."
