Pelly reports to Grey that Fanshawe’s “vigorous measures” had effectively addressed the issue of three murdered British seamen at Nahwitti.

My Lord,
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Under Secretary Peel's letter of the 13th Ultimo transmitting a Copy of a letter from Rear Admiral Moresby to the Secretary of the Admiralty dated October 21st 1851 in which the Admiral refers to letters from Captain Fanshawe of HMS Daphnae [Daphne] giving an account of the proceedings of that Vessel against the Neweete's in Vancouver's Island.
As Copies of Captn Fanshawe's letters have not been transmitted to me I have no observation to make on the Admiral's Communication, but I am happy to inform your Lordship that the Directors of the Hudson's Bay Company have learnt by letters from Mr Douglas that Captain Fanshawe's vigorous measures had impressed the Natives with a salutary terror, that the Murderers ofManuscript imageof the three Seamen had been executed by their own tribe, and that there was every prospect of permanent peace being established.
