Sir,
With reference to my letter of the 26th of April 1861, and to your letter of the following day, I am directed by Earl Russell to transmit to you to be laid before His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, the accompanying copy of a despatch from Her Majesty's Minister at Washington, requesting instructions as to the course to be pursued by him incaseManuscript image case the United States Government should propose negotiations on the subject of the San Juan Boundary Line, together with a copy of a despatch which Lord Russell has addressed to him in reply.
Copies of Lord Lyons' despatches Nos. 193 and 641 of the 11th of May and 9th of November 1861, and of the instruction to His Lordship No 476 of the 16th of December of that year, are also enclosed for the information of the Duke of Newcastle.
