Archibald Barclay, from Shetland Islands, became secretary to the governor and committee,
the
London board of directors of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1843, and served until 1855. He
opposed the HBC venture on
Vancouver Island. In 1848, he wrote to George Simpson that
It is the last place in the globe to which (were I going to emigrate) I should select
as an abode
(Galbraith, 285).
