Cadell, as a
Patron of Progress,gives his support of Colonel Moody for Governor of BC. He asks for an appointment in the new colony.

Cadell to Lytton
With reference to my previous Comn, I beg to remark
that I have notices through the Journals of the day that
Col. Moodie is to be appointed Governor & Commander in Chief
of Br Columbia, an appointment which as a Patron of Progress
I decidedly approve of. Her Majesty's Govt may rest
assured that such appointments will give confidence to the
productive Population of British Columbia.
With the view therefore of [disposing?] of my services to
suit your arrangements according to the views of Governor Moody I would be glad to accept employment either attached
or unattached, connected with the expedition which is now
getting out for immediate despatch to British Columbia via
Cape Horn, acting as Super Cargo or other such employment,
untill Governor Moody has made a distribution of employment in
British Columbia after his arrival there, or I would be glad
to accompany the Governor via Panama & make myself useful
according to circumstances.
I will feel highly grateful indeed if you relieve me from
my present awkward position by granting employment according to
the above method, particularly as my visit to London was caused
by no every day occurrance. The addition of a new Gold producing
Country to Her Majesty's Possessions at a period when I could
feel confident in my usefulness connected therewith being in
possession of matured experience; with reference to Govt employment
connected with the conduct of such a Country particularly
connected with the goldmining & Indian Departments, dervived from
the Events & progressive developments of eight years duration in
the mining Region of California having submitted in that
Country to a continued practical investigation connected with
those subjects, through the most rigid discipline qualifying
for Government employment, instead of mining with the current
of dissipation & intrigue of the North West, which appears to be for a
whole even more powerful than right, overwhelming all Truth
with its continuous & overpowering flow of (what is termed according
to the new system of attack) legitimate falsehood. Hence my extreme
Popularity with the productive & progressive Population in North Western
America, accompanied with the unproductive who are never the less
very good Friends. Since I never could be found productive of
difficulty yielding advantages.
