Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No 56 of the 21st June enclosing a correspondence with the Hudsons Bay Company's Agent at Fort Victoria on the subject of the claims of the Company to lands adjacent to their Forts in British Columbia.
These claims haveManuscript image been referred by mutual consent, to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and until the decision of that Tribunal is obtained no effectual remedy for the inconvenience which you represent can be applied. But it would be desirable in the meantime that you should abstain as much as possible from dealing with land claimed by the Company so as to avoid increasing their claim to compensation should their title to the land be eventuallyManuscript image affirmed.
