Sir,
With reference to Mr Elliot's letter of 26th August last, forwarding a claim of the War Department for repayment of a sum of £2466.16.7 as the balance due to that Department on account of expenses connected with the detachment of Royal Engineers sent to British Columbia in 1858, I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to request you to state to the Duke of Newcastle that They have been in communication with the War Department on the subject of this claim, and havegivenManuscript image given directions to the Paymaster General to transfer to the credit of Army Services the sum of £2568.18.6 from the Vote for British Columbia, upon a revised Statement of the claims of the War Department which has been furnished to Their Lordships.
This sum will be paid out of the amount provided "for arrears" in the Estimate for British Columbia for the year 1863-4.
