On behalf of Pakington, Grafton asks what steps
have been taken towards a settlement of the Claim [for] Stores supplied by the War Department for service of the Artillery Volunteers.Cox’s minute states that no answer regarding the War Office’s claim was received from Seymour yet. Rogers’s minute discusses how to respond to the War Office, with particular concern regarding British Columbia’s finances. The included document asks the War Office to let the claim stand over.
Grafton to Under-Secretary of State
With reference to the letters from this Office of 26 Jany 1867,
57/30/10645, enclosing a Claim on account of Stores supplied by
the War Department for service of the Artillery Volunteers,
British Columbia amounting to
£141.1.3 and to the subsequent
letter of 12 July, and to yours of 26 July and 19th Novr last
on the subject, I am again directed by Sir John Pakington to
call your attention to the above letters and to request you will
state whether any further steps have been taken towards a
settlement of the Claim.

Of course Govr Seymour ought to have answered these dphes. But
at the same time he is in such distress for money that it seems
merely vexatious to press him. I wd be disposed to answer that
the revenues of B.C. are at present in such a state that they
are unable for the present to discharge these engagements, &
that under these circumstances B&C presumes that the W.O. will
allow the claim to stand over till the finances are somewhat restored.
