My Lord,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt on the 18th Instant of Your Lordship's Telegram in the following words:CaptainManuscript image Captain Lascelles died in Vancouver. By desire of the family I request you to give any advice or assistance to Mr Southgate which you can properly afford.
2. I immediately informed Mr Southgate of Your Lordship's instructions.
3. Captain Lascelles was buried on the 17th Instant in the Naval Cemetery at Esquimalt, and was followed to the Grave by the Officers,SeamanManuscript image Seamen and Marines of Her Majesty's Ships in the Harbour, together with a numerous body of the inhabitants.
4. I had been personally acquainted with Captain Lascelles for many years and I greatly regret that owing to the departure of the Mail Steamer I was unable to be present at his funeral.
