No. 36
3rd August 1869
My Lord,
With the unanimous advice and consent of the Executive Council I have caused the expenses connected with the Funeral of the late Governor SeymourtoManuscript image to be defrayed at the cost of the Public. The Royal Naval Cemetry was the place chosen for the interment. Representatives from all classes of the community from all parts of the Colony attended, and every mark of respect was paid to the Remains of Her Majesty's late Representative.
2. The Gazette Extraordinary whichaccomplishedManuscript image accompanied my despatch No 6 of 17th June, will have informed Your Lordship as to the arrangements for the Funeral. They were carried out under my personal supervision, with the assistance of Captain Edye, RN, of Her Majesty's Ship "Satellite," the Senior Naval Officer on this Station, and I would take this opportunitytoManuscript image to acknowledge the valuable aid afforded to me by that Officer on the occasion.
3. Governor Seymour having died in Office, I have the honor to inquire if Your Lordship will cause this Colony to be re-imbursed the expenses of the Funeral from Imperial Funds.
I have the honor to be
My Lord
Your Lordship's most obedient
humble Servant

I do not see any reason why the Imperial Treasury shd pay.
Refuse.
Is there any precedent for such an application (Sir D. Daly, Sir C. Hotham, Sir C. MacCarthy?)

Sir F. Rogers
I know of no precedent. Sir C MacCarthy died at Spa so such an application could hardly arise in his case.
None was made in the cases of Sir Wm Stevens or Sir D. Daly but I find on looking through the VictoriaManuscript image Registry that Sir C. Hotham had a public funeral (See pp 218-56).
In reply shall I write that the expense cannot be borne by the Impl Treasury but that Lord Granville will not object to recommend the Treasury to sanction the payment out of Coll Funds if the Council will pass a covering vote?
Mrs Seymours application for £500 (I may here mention) has been recommended to Treasy.
