With reference to my Letter of the 19th ultimo, I am directed by Lord John Russell to inclose, for the information of His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, a Copy of a Despatch from General Cass to Mr Dallas, which has been communicated by the latter to Lord John RussellManuscript imageRussell, respecting the disputed title to the Island of San Juan.

The American Govt seems as decidedly averse to compromise as it previously expressed itself to arbitration. This unpleasant question therefore, so far as public despatches go, would seem as far from a solution as ever.
