I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 25 of the 13th of May, relative to certain fees paid to the Attorney General of Vancouver Island.
There can be no doubt that a Colonial Attorney General is, generally speaking, not at liberty to charge the Government for his services, but before pronouncing any opinion on Mr.Carey'sManuscript image Carey's [Cary's] case, I should be glad if you would request him to explain on what grounds, being a salaried Officer, he advanced a charge for particular services.
