Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 49 of the 1st of August last, on the subject of the alleged defalcations of Mr. Jeremiah Nagle who was formerly Harbour Master at Victoria and who was dismissed from that Office in 1861.

You state that you had with the advice of your Executive Council directed the amount of these alleged defalcations vizt $308 to be written off the public Accounts, without pronouncing any opinion as to Mr. Nagle's guilt or innocence.
I see no reason for doubting the propriety of the course which you have adopted in this matter.
