No. 30
9 June 1865
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 19 of the 24th of March drawing my attention to the Act of the Legislature of Vancouver Island providing a salary for the Chief Justice.
It will of course be necessary for the Legislature to make a permanent, as distinct from an annual, provision fortheManuscript image the successor of the Chief Justice now to be appointed, when that Officer vacates his appointment, but in the meantime the Act already forwarded by you sufficiently fulfils the condition required by me, which was that Mr. Cameron's successor should not be sent out with an uncertain provision.
I take for granted that on receiving my despatch of the 17th of April you have assented to the Act assigning this salary to the next Chief Justice. If not youshouldManuscript image should of course do so at once.
I have the honor to be
Sir,
Your most obedient
humble servant
Edward Cardwell
