I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 39
of the
15th of June in which you report that
Mr. William Culverwell,
Official Assignee of the Court of Bankruptcy, has absconded from
Vancouver Island, leaving many debts unprovided for.
It does not appear from your despatch, who is responsible for
Mr.
Culverwell's appointment, but I perceive that by an Act of
1st February
1862, the appointment is vested in the Chief Justice, and I cannot but
view with great regret this scandal following upon a similar event in
another Department under the control of the Supreme Court.
