The colonial despatches of Vancouver Island and British Columbia 1846-1871
Cook, George
George Cook was an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) who travelled to
Vancouver Island in
November 1850.1
In 1861, Robert Norman wrote the Colonial Office
on behalf of Cook's mother, who hadn't heard from him for many years.2
Enquiries by the HBC found that Cook was employed at the coal mine belonging to [the HBC]
at Nanaimo from 1853 to 1859, although the company was
not sure if he was still working there.3
