Knockan Hill is located on the southern end of Vancouver Island, northwest of Victoria, in the suburb of Saanich. It appears on an 1855 HBC map; the name was adopted officially in 1934.1 “Knockan” appears to be an anglicization of the Songhees “Nga 'k 'un”, or “rock(s)
on top”; this hill is home to a rich and compelling story which the Geographical Names
Information System entitles as The Wives of the Stars.2
