Romaine writes to Rogers to report that Romaine has been commanded by the Admiralty to ask that Newcastle will ensure that naval-department expenses of “£5294.3.5,” for provisions supplied
to British Columbia, will “be inserted in the Treasury Estimates for the ensuing financial year.”
The first of the two documents included in the file is a draft letter from Elliot to Hamilton, which requests that the paymaster general be authorized to transfer the amount requested
in Romaine's letter; the second is a draft letter from Elliot to the Secretary to the Admiralty, which advises that the Treasury will forward the
allotted sum of “£5294.3.5.”

With reference to my Letter of the 1st July 1859
requesting re-payment of expenses incurred by the Naval
Department, on account of supplies of Provisions supplied
to the Colony of British Columbia, amounting to £5294.3.5,
and in reply to your Letter of the 16th July in the
same year, stating that the Estimate to be submitted to
Parliament for British Columbia had not been voted, but
when that had taken place payment would beordered
ordered; I am
commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, to
request that you will move His Grace the Duke of Newcastle,
to cause the amount to be inserted in the Treasury
Estimates for the ensuing financial year, if not already done.
