Barclay, as directed by the governor and committee of the HBC, writes to
Peel, to forward to
Newcastle, an extract that the HBC had received from
Douglas.
Of the two accompanying documents, the first is a draft letter, from the Colonial
Office to
Barclay, that acknowledges
Barclay’s letter, and advises of
Newcastle’s intention to commend
Douglas, and others, for their “creditable & judicious conduct” in consequence of
Peter Brown’s murder; the second is an extract, from
Douglas to
Barclay, that details
Douglas’s expedition against the Aboriginal men thought responsible for
Peter Brown’s murder.
