No. 24
16th May 1854
My Lord Duke
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, on the 13th
Inst of your Despatch No 9, of the 27th Septr 1853, approving
of the provisional arrangements, made for the better administration of
Justice in this Colony, and transmitting for my guidance a form of the
Commission of the Peace, and two forms of the oaths to be used and taken
by the Justices, on their qualifying.
I have also noted your Grace's remark as to the qualification of
Estate required by the act of Parliament in the case of Gentlemen
nominated in Commissions of the Peace in England which you observe is at
present unnecessary, in
Vancouver's Island, and need not therefore be
introduced in the Commission.
I have the honor to be
Your Grace's most obedient humble Servant
James Douglas
Governor
His Grace The Right
Honble The Duke of Newcastle
Her Majesty's principal Secretary of State
