Trevelyan transmits to the CO a copy of a report on the subject of the appointment of Officers
of Customs in British Columbia.
The minutes appreciate the experience of applicants for customs positions but regret
that there are no opportunities in this field at the moment.
Enclosed is a draft from the Colonial Office to Trevelyan advising that Lytton did not expect to make any customs appointments but would bear the applications in
mind; and Spring-Rice and Goulburn to the Treasury reporting the receipt of applications from colonial customs officers whose jobs had
recently been abolished and who wished for re-employment in British Columbia.

I am desired by the Lords Commissioners of Her
Majesty's Treasury to transmit, for the consideration of
Secretary Sir E.B. Lytton, the enclosed copy of a Report
from the Commissioners of Customs, dated the 7th
Septr/58 on the subject of the appointment of Officers
of Customs in British Columbia.

I have no doubt that the experience of some of these Gentlemen would be very valuable in B. Columbia, & elsewhere, but I fear there is, at present, no oppy of employing them. There is already a Collector of Customs in V. Couver's Isd; & a corresponding office has been lately
created in B. Columbia. I should almost think one Collector of Customs
was abundant there for the present, & until we shall have heard further
from the Governor.
